“Teaching is like a roller coaster. It has its ups and downs. But it’s your choice to scream or enjoy the ride.”
When I first heard, I was going to teach at Sure Foundation Educational Centre I was not thrilled. I had never heard of the school and majority of my friends were going to more prominent schools. However, I was told to trust the journey as sometimes the less appealing journeys lead to the most beautiful destinations. What a journey it was and the destination was beyond anything I could have imagined. It was always my passion to teach, and I grasped this opportunity with both hands. I was surrounded by amazing teachers who were more like mother figures. Never had I met a group of ladies who weren’t my family but had my best interest at heart. You will call them Dr. Clara Ricketts, Mrs Marsha Beckles, Mrs. Marie Tenn and so on but I call them Aunty. As Aunty Claire told me when I applied for a permanent teaching position at the school after my year as a National Youth Service Worker, this school was a family! So yes, they are my aunties and wonderful mother figures.
There were times on this roller coaster journey when I wondered if I made the right decision to apply for a position as a teacher as well as remain teaching year after year. But, just like every roller coaster ride the moments that make you scream are usually followed by the ones that make you smile. I will never forget the behavioural challenges I face or the learning challenges I constantly prayed I was doing enough to address. The sleepless nights, the silent and not so silent tears, the constant wonder. Sometimes I would feel defeated, but I was surrounded by teachers who never gave up. So, how could I? That is where the moments that made me smile motivated me to continue. When I saw these super women, who retired from teaching, still devoting their time to assist those in need I knew I was in the right place. When a child showed improvement after your continuous effort, when a child learned to talk out a problem instead of fight, when a child learned to take on responsibilities and grew, how dare I not smile and relish in the moments of utter bliss. My greatest joy was seeing my students improve. Aunty Claire always reminded me JOY meant Jesus, Others and then Yourself. With Christ in front of me, I knew my students (others) were capable of great things because it was not my job to put how I felt, dwell on my challenges or complain about my adversities. I was put in a position to help and so I did.
What did Sure Foundation do for me? As I said S.F.E.C is not just a school, it’s a family. They offer me more than any school possibly could. Persons I could talk to, persons that genuinely cares for me, amazing educators that taught me how to teach with experience before I even finished college. They helped me to develop a love for children, especially those with special needs, taught me to be responsible and helped me to grow and mature. Without my family at S.F.E.C I would have struggled greatly to achieve my goal of being a certified teacher.
I might have helped to groom some wonderful children and develop my teaching skills, to offer my 110% where I could and love those children. But, this family helped me more that I helped them. The constant prayers, the mentoring, the guidance, the love. Even now I know my aunties will always be there because the bonds of family never break. While my journey has led me from the physical environment of being present there, Sure Foundation Educational Centre will always be home. I’m sure all the students, teachers and stakeholders that have passed through or played a role in S.F.E.C has blessed the school but have also been twice as blessed to be a part of such an amazing family.
I pray that as these teachers continue to work for the greater good of our children I will some day be able to give back twice as much as they gave me. My sincerest gratitude to the team that started me on my journey, Aunty Claire, Aunty Marsha, Aunty Jenny, Aunty Marie and Aunty Jackie. May you continue to be blessed beyond measure. May the doors of Sure Foundation Educational Centre forever be open to those who need it most.
